TALKING FINANCE with Michelle Higgerson of Baiocchi Griffin Private Wealth Top-shelf help A few weeks ago I was ducking and weaving my way through the aisles of the supermarket trying to dodge the masses of the Saturday lunchtime crowd. I couldn't wait to escape the place, but then I ran into a person who I hadn't seen for some years, and it made the timing of my visit all worth it. We solved all the problems of the world right then and there in the dairy aisle, and in a stroke of fortunate timing for my friend, she also had available to her someone with 'go go gadget arms' to grab the item she was needing frustratingly located right at the back of the last box sitting on the fridge's top shelf. Talk about beautiful timing, and by the time we finished chatting even the wild crowds had dwindled. The moral of this story is that my friend knew when to ask for help. She could have tried climbing onto the lower fridge shelves for that extra elevation she needed, but she knew that probably wouldn't have ended well. She could have substituted for a different item, but potentially this would have led to disappointment. Instead, she identified her dilemma and also a person who was able to help her solve it. The same can be said for our financial affairs, knowing when to ask for help can be just as important as the task of asking itself. There are many life events that can trigger the need to ask for help, such as having children, starting a business, inheriting wealth, having a financial windfall, or even a conclusion that it is time to either reduce your workload or completely retire. Seeking advice prior to these events occurring (if possible) can ensure that your position is optimised from the outset and reduces the likelihood of running into 'uh-oh' moments later on, often when it is much harder, complicated and costly to reverse the situation. Sometimes the need to seek advice is caused by factors beyond your control, such as changes to taxation rates or rules that may alter the course of your strategy; frustratingly something experienced far too often with superannuation assets in recent years. This can explain why advice of an ongoing nature is so valuable, you can be assured that advice received is suitable and current at all times, and should any of the major life events described above occur, you have someone on deck ready to assist with relative ease and efficiency. Sometimes in life, or the supermarket, help finds you, but taking control yourself and seeking out help when required may deliver you more than just one top-shelf experience.
